Recently, I introduced a sake called Onikoroshi by Kunimare Brewery. However, as far as I know, there are 10 types of sake named Onikoroshi all over Japan. It means that it is made in various sake breweries.
The origin of the name “Onikoroshi” comes from an anecdote that in the Heian period, when a sake-loving ogre named “Shuten-doji” who lived in the mountains of Kyoto was defeated, he was given sake and made drunk. From there, “sake with a high alcohol content that is so good that even a strong man like an ogre can get drunk” came to be called “Onikoroshi”.
Therefore, I assume that it was popular among heavy drinkers in the past. Modern Onikoroshi seems to have a slightly higher alcohol content and a tendency to be dry.
I love Hokkaido sake, so I don’t collect sake from other regions to drink. For me, Kunimare Brewery’s Onikoroshi is quite enough.
