Is it okay to drink sake in a large Bordeaux wine glass?
This is a method that some enthusiasts made popular. I remember that it was popular at sake events and parties for a while.
Since I have a Bordeaux wine glass at home, I decided to give it a try. I also have a whiskey tasting glass at home, so I’ll try it there as well. Of course, I’ll also try it in a traditional sake cup.
I prepared Kokushi Musou Junmai Ginjo for the sake tasting. I tried it at a cool temperature (59°F). So let’s compare the tastes.
First, the sake cup, then the whiskey tasting glass, and finally the Bordeaux wine glass.
??? ???
I don’t notice much difference. I don’t have a cold, and my nose isn’t stuffy. I had predicted that, as is commonly believed, the larger the sake vessel, the more the aroma would come out, whether it be a whiskey tasting glass or a Bordeaux wine glass. However, with the three types of sake vessels I prepared this time, I didn’t notice much of a difference. In fact, the smallest sake cup brought the nose closer to the liquid, so the aroma was more pronounced.
This is actually my second time doing this experiment. I got the same result the first time, but I became worried that maybe I was just not feeling well or very tired. That’s why I repeated the same experiment.
My conclusion is that I think traditional sake cups(choko, sakazuki, guinomi) are best for sake. This answer is probably not wrong. Because if larger vessels were more suitable for sake in a sake culture that has lasted for over 1,000 years, there should have been large sake vessels made from ceramic. The fact that there are no large ceramic sake vessels means that smaller vessels (choko, sakazuki, guinomi) are more suitable for sake. I also came to the conclusion that drinking sake from a wine glass is a performance at parties and events.
