When I go to Susukino, Sapporo’s nightlife district, I often see weird signs. No, I mean not signs themselves. Probably I should say it is a strange phenomenon.
A sign saying “We have Jizake! ” at the entrance of a restaurant or a Izakaya style pub.
However, the sake being introduced with the sign are from famous breweries in other prefectures. They are not sake from Hokkaido.
Originally, “Jizake” means local sake or sake made in that region. But many restaurant and pub owners misunderstand the meaning of “Jizake”. They use the word “Jizake” to mean famous sake.
What’s going on Susukino!???
I want foreign tourists to know this.
Sake from Hokkaido has really gotten better recently.
This is because Hokkaido is a place that is suitable for sake production. It has everything: a cool climate, large land, sake rice, and good water. As proof of this, sake breweries from the mainland have recently been moving to Hokkaido. They understand the benefits of these things.
In addition, Hokkaido brewers are also enthusiastic about research.
It was inevitable that Hokkaido sake would get better.
Sake lovers around the world!
Since you’ve come all the way to Hokkaido, I hope you enjoy Hokkaido’s local sake. Since there are no distribution costs, you can taste local sake at a reasonable price. It would be foolish to only taste sake that is available anywhere in Japan and then go back home.
