The Law of Delicious Carbohydrates

Snacks go well Sake

Snacks, Side Dishes, or Tapas for Sake, I believe that anything that goes well with wine also goes well with sake.

So even if you live outside of Japan, there are plenty of snacks to go with your sake. Carbohydrates are a typical example. Pasta, various noodles, potatoes, rice, corn, chapati, etc.

Here, I will introduce a way to turn carbohydrates into snacks. I call this t “The Law of Delicious Carbohydrates.”

It is described below.

Delicious Carbohydrates = Carbohydrates + Oil + Salt + Umami

Adding oil, salt, and umami to carbohydrates will always make them delicious.

A typical example is Peperoncini. Fry chopped garlic in olive oil to bring out the umami. Next, add boiled spaghetti, add salty boiling water, and stir.

When you cook, you can use any oil. It can be vegetable oil or animal fats.

Salt goes without saying. It is convenient to use butter, which contains oil and salt.

Ingredients that give off umami include vegetables like garlic and tomatoes, animal proteins like processed meat and fish, and the simplest ones are bouillon, chicken base, and umami seasonings. Most freeze-dried soup bases can be used instead, in which case salt is not necessary. Add these to carbohydrates to create a delicious snack.

Here are some other examples:

Bread with olive oil and anchovies. Simply spread olive oil on bread and top with anchovies.Anchovies contain both salt and umami.

Garlic rice. Fry chopped garlic in oil, add cooked rice and fry further. Finally, season with salt and pepper.

Potatoes and bacon. Cut potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a glass or ceramic bowl and heat in the microwave. Fry chopped bacon in a frying pan to extract the oil. Put cooked potatoes in the frying pan and stir. Sprinkle it with black pepper or dried parsley for perfection.

As you can see, the “The Law of Delicious Carbohydrates” has endless combinations. And it’s simple.

Please give it a try, everyone! Next time, I’ll bring you an advanced version, the “Japanese Style Edition.”
