Just as there are dessert wines, don’t you think there should be dessert sake in Japan too? In fact, there is also Japanese sake that pursues sweetness.
Today I would like to introduce a sake called “Fukkoshu” from Otokoyama Sake Brewery in Asahikawa City、 Hokkaido.
According to the brewery’s explanation, this product is a reproduction of the Junmai Kokomi brewing method found in ancient documents from 350 years ago. How much this sweet drink must have been appreciated in the days when sugar was still only available to the highest class of people.
My impression after one sip was that it was really delicious. This sake has an elegant sweetness. Rather than the sweetness of glucose, it is more like a sweetness of fructose. It is not too heavy or sticky.
The aroma is also elegant and the sweetness is like that of noble rot wine. If you chill it a little and pour it into a liqueur glass, it is perfect as an aperitif or after-dinner drink. It goes very well with blue cheese and Camembert cheese, as well as salty nuts, olives, and dried fruits.
The other day, I enjoyed this sake after lunch on a day off, and before I knew it, half the bottle was gone. What a quick-evaporating drink! Let’s just say it was Angel’s Share. I’m looking forward to offering the other half to God on my next day off.
